1st Bumper (1989)

Stay tooned

Nickname: "STAY TOONED!"

ID: On a grey background, similar to that of the 1989 Feature Presentation ID, we see the gold-red gradient words "STAY" and "TOONED" in the Balloon font coming from opposite ends of the screen - the "STAY" from the top, and the "TOONED" from the bottom. They join, where a flash forms behind them, and spawns a shadow.

Trivia: Uniquely among Stay Tuned IDs, this one advises the viewer to stay tuned for a feature BEFORE the film (in this case, a home video preview for Who Framed Roger Rabbit) instead of after. This also occurs on a Mulan variant of the 2nd bumper described below.

FX/SFX: The two words flying and joining together, the flash, and the appearing shadow of the words.

Music/Sounds: The first eight notes of "Great Ovation", with Brian Cummings saying "Stay tuned for the most fun ever on home video!".

Availability: Rare. Seen on 1989 VHS prints of Cocktail, Heartbreak Hotel, Beaches, Three FugitivesDisorganized Crime, and Ernest Saves Christmas.

2nd Bumper (1992-2006)

ID: We fade into a footage of a still or animating scene of a Disney movie or a music video. As it starts playing, one of the two texts ("Join Us After The Feature" or "Stay Tuned After The Feature") fades in at the bottom of the screen, or occasionally, a variety of different texts could fade in ("After The Movie", "After The Program", "Please Stay Tuned", "Join Us After The Movie", "Premiering After The Movie", "Coming Up After The Movie", "Join Us After The Program," "Join Us After The Show," or "Check Out The Music Video!").

Variants:

  • On the 1998 WDMC VHS release of The Little Mermaid, this ID is not shown. Instead, after we see a special Feature Presentation ID created specifically for the release, before fading away to the home video variant of the THX "Broadway" logo, Jodi Benson (as part of the filler at the start of the VHS where she converses with her CGI pet goldfish, Gil and Phil) reminds the audience "And don't forget to stay tuned after the movie for the music video, 'Part of Your World'!".
  • There exist some early textless variants that are displayed in the closing credits of each movie from 1992-1999. They can be found on Father of the Bride (Version #1), Winnie The Pooh: Playtime and Learning Collection, Ariel's Undersea Adventures, Adventures in Wonderland, Winnie The Pooh and Christmas TooDisney's Sing Along Songs: Disney's The Twelve Days of ChristmasThe Brave Little Toaster (1998 print), The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars, Goof Troop, Darkwing Duck, Winnie The Pooh: Sing a Song with Pooh Bear, Doug's 1st Movie, Fraggle Rock (Volumes 1-5), Mulan (Version #1), Disney's Sing Along Songs: Aladdin: Friend Like Me and Disney's Sing Along Songs: Snow White: Heigh-Ho. Another variant like this is found on the 1992 WDC VHS release of 101 Dalmatians (later pressings only), where it's displayed over the film's custom Buena Vista logo at the end. (On early pressings, the logo is silent, and no previews follow.)
  • A Canadian French variant of this bumper exists and is described below.
  • A Spanish variant of The Sixth Sense bumper exists.

FX/SFX: None for the 1992-1999 and 1997-1999 variants, but the 1999-2006 and Gargoyles variants are animated.

Music/Sounds/Voice-over Variants: The music playing in the background is either a 25-note string theme, parts of the movie's soundtrack, generic music relating to the movie or music from a following featurette or a music video or the end credits theme. Beau Weaver, Brian Cummings, Tom Kane, Mark Elliot, Jim Cummings, Grant Goodeve or a female announcer say the following:

  • On the 1993 VHS of Honey, I Blew Up the Kid, the text reads "STAY TUNED" & below it, "after our feature...", The announcer says "Stay tuned after our feature, for a special music video."
  • On the 1993 VHS and Betamax of A Stranger Among Us, the announcer says "After our feature, stay tuned for more great previews".

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: The music for the Jim Henson Video logo plays and an announcer says "Stay tuned after our feature, for more great previews." The announcer is Brian Cummings. The "A SPECIAL MESSAGE after our feature" has the same announcer, say "Stay tuned after our feature, for a special message".

Availability: Rare. Seen on (non-Classics/Masterpiece) Disney, Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures video releases from 1992 to 1995. Not all tapes had this though. And once the Flashbang bumper debuted in 1994, it only appeared sporadically until it was ultimately replaced with the next bumper.

7th Bumper (Fraggle Rock) (1993)

Vlcsnap-2018-08-04-23h57m11s728

Nicknames: Same as the Fraggle Rock Feature Program ID.

Bumper: Same as the Fraggle Rock Feature Program ID, except that the text says "Stay Tuned...".

Music/Sounds: Same as the Fraggle Rock Feature Program ID, but Brian says "Stay Tuned for another episode of Fraggle Rock".

Availability: Same as the Fraggle Rock Feature Program ID.

8th Bumper (1994-1999)

ID: The blue text "STAY TUNED AFTER THE FEATURE" zooms out on a black background; and then a white flash occurs. After the flash dies down, the background changes to blue and the text becomes white. The text fades out moments later and the 1994-2001 "FEATURE PRESENTATION" text in white fades in.

The Crow Variants:

  • On both the original 1994 VHS and the 1997 widescreen reissue of The Crow, there is no text zooming out. Instead, the film's crow symbol zooms out on a dark green background, and when the screen flashes, the background turns to a pale dark blue and the text appears saying "AFTER THE FEATURE" on the top and "LAST ON-CAMERA INTERVIEW WITH BRANDON LEE" at the bottom. The entire ID fades out and the standard 1994-1999 "FEATURE PRESENTATION" ID with the white text and blue background fades in.
  • The 1996 VHS of The Crow: City Of Angels features a similar variant to the above with some notable changes. The dark green background is now also a pale dark blue. The text (which is now in a different font) reads at the bottom "A SPECIAL BRANDON LEE TRIBUTE", and after the ID fades out, "NOW AVAILABLE ON CD & CASSETTE" (with white text on a blue background) fades in rather than "FEATURE PRESENTATION."

FX/SFX: The zoom in, and the white flash.

Music/Sounds: An extended version of the 1994 FEATURE PRESENTATION music (a whooshing sound followed by an orchestral hit and a quiet note), with synth notes added to the entire duration of the quiet note, which in turn is followed by Brian Cummings saying "Stay tuned after the feature for more great previews. And now, our feature presentation."

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On the Crow variant, Brian Cummings says "Stay tuned after the feature for the last on-camera interview with Brandon Lee, which includes never-before-seen footage. And now, our feature presentation."
  • On the Crow: City of Angels variant, Brian Cummings says "Stay tuned after the feature for a special Brandon Lee tribute, which includes never-before-seen footage. And now, see what's available on CD and cassette."
  • On the 1996 VHS of The Rock and the 1997 Widescreen VHS of From Dusk Till Dawn, Brian Cummings says "Stay tuned after the feature for a very special message. And now, our feature presentation." A similar variant exists on the 1997 releases of Scream and Trainspotting, but without "very".
  • On the 1995 VHS releases of Tall Tale and Camilla, Brian Cummings says "Stay tuned after the feature for another great preview. And now, our feature presentation."

Availability: Seen on some Disney and associated releases from 1994 to 1999, including the Disney's Sing-Along Songs tapes of the period.

9th Bumper (1996)

Stay Tuned After From Dusk Till Dawn

ID: On a black background, we see the words "After The Feature". Below them, the words "Stay Tuned... Never Before Seen Footage" wipe in.

FX/SFX: "Stay Tuned... Never Before Seen Footage" wiping in.

Music/Sounds: Beau Weaver saying "Stay tuned for never before seen footage and interviews from the set of From Dusk Till Dawn."

Availability: Only seen on the 1996 VHS of From Dusk Till Dawn.

9th Bumper (Pulp Fiction) (1996)

Special program bumper

ID: On a black background, we see the words "PULP FICTION" in yellow, then "SPECIAL PROGRAM" below them in white.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: A male announcer (who would later announce for 20th Century Fox) says "Watch for our special program narrated by director Quentin Tarantino coming up right after the movie."

Availability: Appears on the 1996 Special Collector's Edition VHS of Pulp Fiction.

10th Bumper (2000-2004)

ID: Depends on the variants...

  • Zoom-Out: Similar to the 1994 IDs, but barely reminiscent of those. It is in the same font, but "PREVIEWS" is zooming out without any flash.
  • Filmreel: "Previews" comes down from above the screen in the same manner as the 11th ID, except that's the only text on the screen. This variant is more similar to the IDs it is based off of.

Trivia: Much like the first ID, this asks viewers to stay tuned before a film.

Variant: An early variant of the "Filmreel" version exists where the background is still and "Previews" moves from the left of the screen above the gold bar.

FX/SFX: The text animating.

Music/Sounds: Brian Cummings says "Join us, for the following previews!". The Zoom-Out ID has the intro to "Great Ovation", and the Filmreel variant has the standard music played on Filmreel IDs.

Availability: Ultra rare, as this was only seen on Buena Vista Home Entertainment demo tapes from the early 2000s (with the exception of Under the Tuscan Sun, which uses two of the standard filmreel bumpers). The zoom-out version only appeared on Dimension Home Video demo tapes. The early filmreel version can be found on 2000-01 demo tapes such as The Kid, crazy/beautiful, High Fidelity, and Chocolat. One of the first tapes to use the later filmreel variant was Unbreakable.

11th Bumper (January 11th, 2000-October 4th, 2005)

ID: Same as the other filmreel IDs from the era, except the clip-on says "Join Us AFTER THE PROGRAM".

Variants:

  • On the 2004 VHS of Kill Bill: Volume 1, only the words "AFTER THE FEATURE" appear on where the "AFTER THE PROGRAM" text would normally appear. The animation of the ID seems to be slowed down as well. The announcer for this variant is Tom Kane.
  • On the 2000 VHS print of Tarzan and the 2001 VHS releases Santa Who?, U.S. prints of Recess Christmas: Miracle on Third Street, The Book of Pooh: Stories from the Heart, and Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed In At the House Of Mouse, the top portion has the words "More Excitement" slide in, while the words "FROM DISNEY" side in on the golden bar.
  • There is an extremely rare variant that is seen on the 2000 VHS of Diamonds. The colored squares and golden arrows are removed from the filmreel background, and instead of the usual text, we see "Join Us After the Feature for a Special Message", in gold, displayed on the screen.
  • On VHS prints of Chocolat (2001 printings), The Country Bears, Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch, the 2004 VHS of Mulan and the 2005 Platinum Edition VHS of Cinderella, "MOVIE" takes "PROGRAM"'s spot. Also, the font for "AFTER THE MOVIE" is in a regular sans-serif font (this is actually the same font for "TO OWN ON DVD" in the original 2002 Now Available To Own On DVD ID).
  • International variants exist, which are described further down this page.

FX/SFX: The usual filmreel ID animation.

Music/Sounds: Just the usual soft electronic theme used by Disney during the 1999-2006 era, with Brian Cummings saying "Join us after the program for a special message from Disney".

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On the "More Excitement FROM DISNEY" version, Beau Weaver says "And there's more excitement coming your way from Disney!"
  • On the "AFTER THE MOVIE" variant, Brian Cummings says "Be sure to join us after the movie for a special program".
  • On the Diamonds variant, the ID is silent except for Tom Kane saying "Join us after the feature for a special message from Kirk Douglas."
  • On the demo VHS of Inspector Gadget 2, a different voiceover is heard.
  • On the "AFTER THE FEATURE" variant, Tom Kane says "Watch the trailers from writer/director Quentin Tarantino, coming up right after the feature." Instead of the standard flat music, a song from the film's soundtrack, "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" by Tomoyasu Hotei, is used in it's place.

Availability: Uncommon; seen on the VHS releases of Dinosaur and The Country Bears as well as some other VHS releases from the period. The "After the Feature" variant is extremely rare; it was seen only on the 2004 VHS release of Kill Bill: Volume 1. The last tape to use this ID is the 2005 Platinum Edition VHS release of Cinderella.

Editor's Note: The white "After the Feature" text on the "After The Feature" variant is quite hard to make out on the bright gold rectangle it appears on. Also, why isn't it animated in a similar fashion to the original ID? The finished product overall seems like a rushed job.

12th Bumper (Buena Vista/Miramax) (2003-2006)

Join us after the program (2003)

ID: On a green background with moving sound wave bars in white, the text "Join Us After The Program" moves all over the screen, separately, until it centers itself in the middle of the screen, zooming in. The text shines. After a few seconds, the text zooms out and in, and the images ripple.

FX/SFX: The sound wave bars moving, the text popping up on the screen.

Music/Sounds: A techno hip-hop tune, with Brian Cummings saying "Be sure to join us after the feature for more fun and excitement!"

Availability: Uncommon. Seen on the demo VHS of Pokémon Heroes, the regular VHS of Pokémon: Jirachi Wish Maker, and the VHS of Power Rangers Dino Thunder: Day of the Dino.

13th Bumper (Playhouse Disney) (2001)

Join Us After the Program (PHD variant)

ID: On a pink/magenta background, the words "Join Us After The Program" in a sky blue color zoom in one row at a time, all the while handprints appear all over the background. As the ID finishes, a circle cuts to a black background.

FX/SFX: The handprints, the words zooming in, and the circle cutting the screen.

Music/Sounds: A whimsical woodwind jingle, with Brian Cummings saying "Join us after the program for more excitement from Disney!" This is the same jingle that was used on the feature program variant and other IDs of its type.

Availability: Extremely rare, as it was only used for a short time. Furthermore, only three tapes are known to have this ID: The Book of Pooh: Fun With Words, The Book of Pooh: Fun With Friends and the 2001 reprint of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Any post-2001 releases will have either the 2nd or 11th ID.

Editor's Note: The circle cutting the screen at the end looks very choppy and rough. The circle first cuts out at a slow and smooth pace, and then quickly speeds up near the end. Overall, though, it's a cute bumper.

International Versions

United Kingdom

1st Bumper
(Early 1991)

Stay Tuned Logo 1990

ID: On a black background, the gold and shiny words "STAY TUNED" are seen in a Rockwell font.

Trivia: Interestingly, not only does this have an American-sounding announcer, but it happens to Brian Cummings, whose voiceover here (mentioned below) was shortened for use in a couple of American IDs. Brian Cummings would also perform the voiceover for another stay tuned ID on the 1994 South Korean VHS release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

FX/SFX: A shine going across the text.

Music/Sounds: None, except Brian Cummings saying "Stay tuned after our feature, for a look at other great titles available from Walt Disney Home Video." After that, there's three seconds of silence before the ID fades out.

Availability: Rare; as of now, it can be seen only on the 1991 UK VHS release of Ducktales The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp.

Editor’s Note: As previously mentioned, this stay tuned ID is noteworthy for containing an American-sounding announcer on a British VHS release of a Disney movie. This led to various YouTube accounts creating their own 1991 VHS openings of Disney films that would include this stay tuned ID and then WDSHE’s 1989-92 FP ID, as described here.
